Phone and Ergonomics

The K800 is a logical upgrade to the K750.  With 3.2MP camera, 3G (EDGE on the K790 - in other respects K790 and K800 are the same phone) and improved java engine.

Other changes include a change to M2 memory stick media, increased onboard memory to 64MB (though in deleting all supplied content I found 72MB on my phone), bluetooth A2DP stereo audio profile, ability to remove read/write prompts for java apps, xenon flash instead of camera light, video call, profile selection by off button (like Nokia) and other goodies.

UI is still very similar to K750 and earlier, but with a few nice additions:

Buttons

Power Button:  Pressing the off button once, gives you a profile selection menu aka Nokia.  Long pressing turns the unit off.  Unfortunately flight mode cannot be selected from this menu.  It is still necessary to restart the phone to access flight mode.

Online Button: There are now several additional buttons compared to the K750 and earlier SE handsets.  The Online button gives quick access to the internet browser. If your phone is branded this will bring up your carriers wap page.  If unbranded it will bring up SE's wap page.  You can change the page by editing the internet profile homepage.

Activity Button:  The activity menu has been relocated to the right hand side between the right softkey and "c" button.  Now branding by carriers doesn't have to steal the activity menu button - they can use the "online" button instead.

Photo Gallery buttons:  There are also two additional buttons at the top of the handset.  These buttons are for accessing the camera gallery photos in full screen or thumbnail view, or when the camera is open, to select between shoot mode or scenes (more on this later)

And the usual "Play" button and "volume up down" buttons remain the same.

Internet Browser

Internet browser now comes with smart resize mode (to make content fit better on mobile device).  This works well most of the time, and allows most full html websites to be easily viewable.  However, the N73 browser kicks the K800 all over town (though it irks me to admit it).

The browser can also be cycled between normal, full screen, and rotate mode (rotates browser window to landscape view for a wider display), by pressing the *.

Page can be zoomed in or out by pressing 0 and using joystick up or down to zoom in or out.

Other keyboard shortcuts:

0 Zoom
1 takes you to bookmarks
2 enter address
3 Internet search
4 History
5 Refresh Page
6 Forward
7 top of page
9 bottom of page
* fullscreen/rotate/normal
# Turn off keypad shortcuts

Media Player

Music Player and Video Player are now two separate applications.  They will only display files stored in the "music" and "videos" folder's respectively.  The onboard file manager can play videos or music stored in other locations, but they will not play in the music/movie player applications, so you won't have access to features such as pause, ff and rew. For full featured music/movie players, go to Menu then Music Player, or Menu then Entertainment then Movie Player.

Supported file types:
- AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+ (or MP4/M4A)
- AMR-NB (narrowband) and AMR-WB (wideband)
- MP3
- Real Audio 8
- WMA
- WAV
- MP4-based files (MPEG4 video with AAC/AMR audio)
- 3GPP-based files (MPEG4/H.263/H.264 video with AAC/AMR audio)
- Real Video 8
- WMV.

Format Support - the fine print

Audio support is broad, and most audio files of the supported format will play off the bat.  However video support is another story altogether.  QVGA (320x240) MP4's will generally only play if they are encoded in Xvid or H263; videos encoded in H264 will only play if they are QCIF resolution (176x144).  Only the Visual Simple Profile is supported, video encoded using the Advanced Visual Simple Profile are not supported.   Windows Media Video will only play if encoded at QCIF resolution using Windows Media Video 9 and Windows Media Audio 9.  Real Media will only play if encoded in Real Media 8 at QCIF resolution.

So there are quite a few restrictions on playing of video, meaning you will not be able to download video and have it play straight up on your K800.  It will usually be necessary to re-encode the video.  The best settings for quality playback on the K800 are 320Kbps, 25 fps, 320x240 resolution, using the Xvid codec for video and lc-aac for audio.
Super(c) is an excellent tool for this.

Controls

The Music Player has dropped the mega bass option, and it's no longer possible to specify the Play button function (it will start the music player or radio, which ever was used last)

A stereo widening feature has been introduced, and this works well with the integrated speakers, but not so well with the headset.  Bluetooth supports the A2DP profile, so Stereo bluetooth headsets can be used (but will use a lot of battery power - so if you use one expect to suck the battery dry in no time)

Video watching can be paused, resized to fullscreen, rotated to landscape mode and you can zoom in on the clip while playing (up to 32 times).

The Camera

What we all came here for!  The K800 has a 3.2MP camera with 3GP video recording.  The camera light has been replaced with a full xenon flash and red autofocus light.   Photos are good, but autofocus is not as competent as K750, and jpg compression is too high.  Also sensor quality seems more in the league of N73 than K750, though in my view the K800 still takes superior photos compared to the N73.

New features include: red eye reduction, best pic (take 9 shots in one go and pick the best one), xenon flash, physical shutter blinds for better light metering, stability filter, spot metering and scenes.

The camera also has the usual: time and date, white balance, self timer settings.

SCENES
Scenes give you a quick way of selecting a group of settings that suit a certain set of conditions, for example twilight landscape.  Scenes include:

Auto
Twilight landscape
Twilight portrait
Landscape
Portrait
Beach/snow
Sports
Document

0 = Camera Help
1 = Toggle picture size
3 = Zoom Out (you can also use up volume key)
4 = Toggle Macro mode
6 = Zoom In (you can also use down volume key)
7 = Stability (video mode)
* = Toggle Flash

Top left button = Change Shoot Mode
Top right button = Change Scenes
volume button = digital zoom control
up joystick=decrease exposure
down joystick=increase exposure
right joystick=camera mode
left joystick=video mode
(joystick directions mentioned above are taken to be the direction if the phone is held vertically. Since the camera is used horizontally, the up joystick command appears as left joystick etc)
